Mag. Dr. Thomas Barth wurde 1965 in Wien geboren. Nach der Matura am BG-BRG Tulln war er in den Bereichen Musik sowie New Media in Wien, Dänemark und New York tätig.
Von 1984 bis 1987 studierte er Psychologie und Philosophie an der Universität Wien. 1989 absolvierte er den Universitätslehrgang für Werbung und Verkauf (heute: Universitätslehrgang „Marketing & Sales“) an der WU Wien.
2006 folgte ein Praktikum an der Klinik für Psychosomatische Medizin und Psychotherapie in Ulm.
2007 erlangte er den Bakkalaureus der Psychotherapiewissenschaften an der Sigmund Freud PrivatUniversität (SFU) Wien mit der Arbeit “Modelle zur Phänomenologie und Analyse von Vorurteilen”. Seit diesem Jahr leitet er auch das Gedächtnistraining in der Tagesstätte des jüdischen Elternheims Wien und entwickelte gemeinsam mit Mag. Dr. Susanne Ogris die Methode des „Assoziativen Gemeinschaftsgedächtnisses“.
Von 2007 bis 2011 arbeitete er als Psychotherapeut in Ausbildung unter Supervision in der Praxis von Prof. Dr. Brigitte Sindelar. Am 9. Juni 2009 erfolgte die Sponsion zum Magister der Psychotherapiewissenschaften (SFU Wien). 2010 schloss er seine psychoanalytische Ausbildung am Psychoanalytischen Seminar Innsbruck (PSI) ab. Seit dem 6. Juli 2011 ist er eingetragener Psychotherapeut in die Liste des Bundesministeriums für Gesundheit, Österreich (Nr. 7786).
Im Juli 2011 gründete er seine psychotherapeutische Praxis in 1090 Wien, Grünentorgasse 26/36. Am 17. Jänner 2012 promovierte er an der SFU Wien zum Doktor der Psychotherapiewissenschaft mit der Dissertation „Wer Freud Ideen gab“ (Betreuung: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Gerhard Kubik).
2013 erhielt er die Zertifizierung in OPD-2 (Operationalisierte Psychodynamische Diagnostik).
Seit 1. Februar 2017 ist er assoziierter Lehranalytiker mit partieller Lehrbefugnis (Univ.-Lektor PA) am PSI in Kooperation mit der SFU Wien.Von August 2017 bis Juli 2021 war er als Psychotherapeut im Haus der Barmherzigkeit, gerontopsychiatrische Schwerpunktstation (1220 Wien), tätig.
Von 2023 bis 2025 absolvierte er eine Fortbildung in Neuropsychoanalyse bei Prof. Dr. Mark Solms.
Seine Publikationen und Vorträge befassen sich unter anderem mit Psychoanalyse, Cultural Studies, und Musik. Ein Ergebnis dieser Kombination ist sein Konzept „Psychoanalysis and Music: Elements of the Soul“, das er am 19. Juli 2025 beim World Congress for Psychotherapy (WCP) in Wien präsentierte. Für Barth sind Musik und Psychoanalyse komplementäre Gebiete. Beide gründen auf Zuhören, emotionaler Resonanz und kreativem Austausch sowie auf dem Erleben von Bedeutung jenseits dessen, was sich in Worten ausdrücken lässt.

Mag. Dr. Thomas Barth was born in Vienna in 1965. After completing secondary education at BG-BRG Tulln, he was active in the fields of music and new media in Vienna, Denmark, and New York.
From 1984 to 1987, he studied psychology and philosophy at the University of Vienna. In 1989, he completed the postgraduate program in Advertising and Sales (now Marketing & Sales) at the Vienna University of Economics and Business.
In 2006, he undertook a clinical internship at the Department of Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy in Ulm, Germany. In 2007, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in psychotherapy sciences from Sigmund Freud Private University Vienna (SFU). Since that year, he has directed memory training at the day center of the Jewish retirement home in Vienna and, together with Mag. Dr. Susanne Ogris, developed the method of Associative Collective Memory (Assoziatives Gemeinschaftsgedächtnis).
From 2007 to 2011, he worked as a psychotherapist in training under supervision in the private practice of Prof. Dr. Brigitte Sindelar. On June 9, 2009, he was awarded the Master’s degree in psychotherapy sciences (SFU Vienna). In 2010, he completed his psychoanalytic training at the Psychoanalytic Seminar Innsbruck (PSI). Since July 6, 2011, he has been a licensed psychotherapist registered with the Austrian Federal Ministry of Health (No. 7786).
In July 2011, he started his private psychotherapy practice in Vienna. On January 17, 2012, he received a doctorate in psychotherapy sciences from SFU Vienna with the dissertation “Who Gave Freud His Ideas” (supervisor: Prof. Dr. Gerhard Kubik). In 2013, he obtained certification in OPD-2 (Operationalized Psychodynamic Diagnostics).
Since February 1, 2017, he has served as an associate training analyst with partial teaching authorization (University Lecturer in Psychoanalysis) at PSI in cooperation with SFU Vienna. From August 2017 to July 2021, he worked as a psychotherapist at the gerontopsychiatric unit of Haus der Barmherzigkeit in Vienna. Between 2023 and 2025, he completed advanced training in neuropsychoanalysis with Prof. Dr. Mark Solms.
His publications and lectures focus on psychoanalysis, cultural studies, and music. One outcome of this interdisciplinary work is his concept “Psychoanalysis and Music: Elements of the Soul,” which he presented on July 19, 2025, at the World Congress for Psychotherapy (WCP) in Vienna. For Barth, music and psychoanalysis are complementary fields, both grounded in listening, emotional resonance, and creative exchange, as well as in the experience of meaning beyond what can be articulated in words.
